10 Kg of Pure Gold Perfection

Most probably have never heard of this limited edition Canadian coin.

The Spirit of Haida Gwaii pure gold coin is the world's first 10 Kg (22.0462262 lb) gold coin of 99.999% purity. Its $100,000 face value makes it the world's highest denomination 10 Kg gold coin and highest denomination non-circulation coin.
It is the second-highest denomination coin ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which produced a 100 Kg gold bullion coin of 99.999% purity with a $1,000,000 face value in 2007.

10 Kg Gold coin The coin's massive size (180 mm - 7.09 inches) is fittingly complemented by the image of Bill Reid's monumental sculpture featured on its reverse. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Susanna Blunt.

October 5, 1984. 7:03:00 a.m. EDT. Blast off. Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off, carrying Marc Garneau, the first Canadian to travel into space. One of the seven crew members of Mission STS-41-G, Garneau conducted multiple Canadian-designed experiments as a payload specialist. After 8 days + 5 hours, orbiting Earth 133 times, the astronaut came back to Earth a Canadian hero. He would later set out on two more space flights: STS-77 in 1996 and STS-97 in 2000.

Phasing out the Penny

Final Penny Final Penny

The final year for minting the Canadian 1¢ (penny)

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government announced it would phase out the penny from Canada's coinage system. The decision to phase out the penny was due to its excessive and rising cost of production relative to face value, the increased accumulation of pennies by Canadians in their households, environmental considerations, and the significant handling costs the penny imposes on retailers, financial institutions and the economy in general.

The estimated savings for taxpayers from phasing out the penny is $11 million a year. The cent will remain Canada's smallest unit for pricing goods and services. This will have no impact on payments made by cheque or electronic transactions—only cash transactions will be affected. Moreover, pennies can still be used in cash transactions indefinitely with businesses that choose to accept them.

Evolution of The Canadian Penny's
Physical Specifications

The following table shows the changes in size, weight and materials used in the manufacture of the Canadian circulation penny from 1858 to 2012. A clear demonstration of cost cutting by modifying the metallic composition and reducing the dimentions of the coin, both in diamater and thickness.

of the Netherlands Silver $10

A life saved is a bond forged. This selectively coloured coin shows the Liberation of the Netherlands from the perspective of those who lived it. Beneath the repeating "V" (for Victory) in Morse code, its depiction of a gift of tulips serves as a tribute to the people of the Netherlands and to the First Canadian Army, which was cast in the role of liberator in 1945.

I am sure this is not a comprehensive representation of coins
honouring our veterans but it demonstrates a point in a small way.

Honouring Amber Valley’s place in Canadian history

They headed north to Canada, lured by the promise of land and guided by the hope of a better life free from racial violence. Arriving in Amber Valley (formerly Pine Creek), Alberta, the Black settlers worked hard to establish a thriving community, some 300 people strong, blazing a trail as they went and building a rich legacy through their achievements.

The 2024 Commemorating Black History coin brings to life an often-overlooked story from Canada’s immigration history. Its finely engraved reverse captures the spirit of Amber Valley, one of the largest Black settlements in western Canada during the early 20th century, and honours the Black pioneers who persevered through hardships and hostility, facing down discrimination and building up a foundation for future generations.

Numismatic Information

The Currency displayed on this site covers a wide range of face values. The rarer a coin the higher the value to colletors. Some coins were minted in extremely low volumes further increasing their Numismatic value. The materials used vary greatly and rare metal coins are far more valuable than the common blends.

Minting error
Minting errors are rare, generally minor, and are usually caught before being released.
Click for larger image

Oddities like minting errors further increase the value of a coin. It goes without saying that the coins here vary in price from a few dollars to many thousads of dollars, regardless of the face value depicted on the coin.

Coin collecting is a common passion around the world. You can investigate the value of any coin you may be interested in possessing. Not only material but the quality of a coin makes the value fluctuate. Collectors value quality as well as rareness of any coin from uncirculated to fine condition and the far more common circulated coinage.

Mints cater to the collector by minting colourised versions of some coins. The mint itself profits greatly from these variations by selling uncirculated coinage and by limiting the number of coins minted to further increas the value to both the mint and the collector.
