Temperature Conversion - Comprehensive Temperature scales and their origins.
Celsius | Fahrenheit | Kelvin | Rankine | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Water boils | 100°C | 212°F | 373.16°K | 671.67°R |
Water freezes | 0°C | 32°F | 273.16°K | 491.67°R |
Absolute zero | -273.16°C | -459.7°F | 0°K | 0°R |
See the table above for relative comparison of the four commonly used
temperature scales. Note the
Conversion link above for conversion to various other
scales as well, in use in various parts of the world, and their origins.
Outside the United States, most of the world uses the Celsius scale created by Swedish scientist Anders Celsius.
The Celsius scale is based on a 100 degree division between the freezing and boiling points of water: water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees C.
Temperatures below 0 degrees are designated as - degrees C.
German scientist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit created the temperature scale where
water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and boils at 212 degrees F. The Fahrenheit temperature scale includes negative temperatures, below 0 degrees F. Used in the US and some Caribbean nations. Fahrenheit is 1.8 times the size of a degree Celsius.
The Kelvin scale was adapted from the Celsius scale in the 19th century by the British scientist William Thompson, later Lord Kelvin.
Kelvin was designed in order to set the zero point of the temperature scale at absolute zero at 0 K. The Kelvin temperature is widely used in scientific equations and calculations, primarily because of its intuitive decimal based system.
The Rankine scale provides an absolute zero-based equivalent to the Fahrenheit scale. Essentially, it is for the Fahrenheit scale what Kelvin is for Celsius.
Very useful information. I keep my computer system running 24 hours a day and
calculating the cost of electrical energy consumed seemed not only logical but
desirable. Instead of creating my own calculator I scoured the WEB for a suitable
solution and found the link below. You can use preselected devices or enter your own
details for calculation purposes.
I also purchased an Energy Monitor pictured on right.
If you too would like to find out the energy consumed by a device you are using,
this type of monitor can be very handy. Instead of recommending a specific unit
(I purchased mine at Canadian Tire ($19.95), click image for details) I suggest you find one available in your neck
of the woods.
Check how much you pay per KWH for energy (varies GREATLY) from jurisdiction to
jurisdiction, and calculate the cost of running your appliance, tool or just a nightlight.
Gas Oil Mixture Calculate the amount of oil to be added to a tank of gasolene for use in a 2-cycle engine
Probably more conversions than you ever wanted to see or use but most handy all the same. I know I often wondered how much my 100 Gallon tank weighed or how many cubic feet it occupied, well now it is easy to figure out. Often while gardening you may need to figure out how many cubic feet of material you need to do a job, so the tables here should be most useful. Horses are measured in hands and some still use stones as a unit of weight, not to mention the confusion caused by Metric, Imperial and US units.

So what is an acre? Well anyone could look it up in a table of conversions and find it listed as 4840 square yards, but why this peculiar number? Furthermore why isn’t it a square number? (The square root of 4840 = 69.5701085)
It is in fact the area of a strip of land 1 chain wide by 1 furlong in length, where a chain is 22 yards and a furlong is 10 chains (hence 22 x 220 = 4840). According to popular history this is an estimate of how much land a farmer could till in a day with a horse drawn plough. Now that you are aware of this I’m sure it’s relevance to modern applications will become clear!
NOTE:
The league – The league originally referred to the distance a person could walk in an hour. No longer in use and the measure varies greatly by region.

1 Knot = 1 Nautical Mile per hour.
One nautical mile is equal to a single arc minute of a line of longitude.
1 Nautical mile = 6076.12 ft. 1852.001376 m
(1 Statute mile = 5280 feet 1609.344
m).
The former British unit of length equal to 1853.18 m (6080 ft.), was replaced by the international nautical mile in 1970.
Sound travels at (Mach 1) 661.7 Knots or 761.471 mph or 1225.468 Kmh or 340.3 meters/second or 1116 ft/second at sea level 15° C (59° F).
Sound travels 1 kilometre in roughly 3 seconds and 1 mile in roughly 5 seconds. If you see lightning you can count the seconds it takes the sound of thunder to reach you, allowing you to estimate how close the lightning was to your location.

The metric system is based on 10s.
For example, 10 millimetres = 1 centimetre,
10 centimetres = 1 decimetre, and 10 decimetres = 1 meter.

While I tried to capture all the commonly used measurements and some perhaps rarely used today, there are none the less measurements such as tsp, tbsp, oz, cups etc... and their metric equivalents used in cooking that are better captured at the link below.

Comprehensive Conversion Table – both common and many rarely used
Perhaps the mother of all conversion tables, that seems to include virtually
everything is:
Convert-me.com – Here you'll find instant conversions for thousands of various units and measurements, both common (e.g. Imperial, U.S. or metric) and quite exotic like ancient Greek and Roman.

A Dictionary of Units of Measurement – Some explanation, some valuable insight
Since web pages vanish frequently, here are two more dictionaries for units of measure.
You may be surprised at just how many things we earthlings measure. Americans probably use a greater variety of units of measurement than anyone else in the world.

Virtually everyone in the world has abandoned the old Imperial measures for the much
easier to use and more logical Metric system (decimal based system) with the exception of
the USA. Not only is the US using the antiquated systems based on the size of your thumb
or foot etc... they have managed to confuse the number system as well. The number system
after a million represents a different value (some changes are being made to adopt the
US system but not many) a milliard (one thousand million) used throughout the world for centuries is
a billion in the USA (a billion is 1 million million by the traditional standards). One would wonder why the Pilgrims rebelled against
everything civilised from the world of their ancestors. Fortunately numbers can be written without naming their value, avoiding some confusion.
Commonly used words often have a universal English spelling and a U.S. version.
Even the "English Alphabet" has a U.S. pronunciation which in some cases is more confusing, as in
Zee for the simple, Z, pronounced in English as Zed, that is clear and distinct from B, C, E, D, G, or T.
A kilometre A metric unit of length equal to 1000 metres (or 0.621371 miles)
U.S. spelling kilometer
In order to understand the numbers it is important to understand that each number
is represented by
10 and a superscript 3 where the
superscript represents the number of 0's following the 1
therefore
102 = 100
103 = 1,000
106 = 1,000,000
109 = 1,000,000,000
1012 = 1,000,000,000,000
It can be confusing to see the same number represented by different names.
Standards are important! The original
scale used for naming numbers was the Long Scale but the US created the
Short Scale which is largely accepted naming standard for large numbers
(some countries still use the Long Scale).
The Long and Short scales diverge after a Million (1,000,000).
I don't expect you to
memorise the names of all these numbers but here they are for your reference. After a
Trillion it would be hard to keep track of the digits and the names don't roll off
your tongue either.
