Each year on November 11th, Remembrance Day, we remember those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy in Canada, as well as those who are currently protecting our nation's liberty. In Port Dover, Remembrance Day ceremonies on Main St. at Powell Park are well attended in all kinds of weather. Many groups, organisations and families lay a wreath at the Memorial honouring our heroes. Similar ceremonies take place across the country in Hamlets, Towns and Cities of all sizes.

Wear a Poppy
Taps – by US Army Band
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army
In 2015, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the writing of In Flanders Fields and the Second Battle of Ypres. This iconic poem was written on May 3, 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae during the Second Battle of Ypres — the first time gas was used in modern warfare.

Fred Napoli Recites - In Flanders Fields

It is the
VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the
VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the
VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the
VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the
VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the
VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote.
Our freedoms were won at a great price.
We honour those who paid the ultimate price
and the families who lost their loved ones.
We also remember and honour those who's
injuries have caused a lifetime of various
degrees of impairment, pain and suffering.
Thank a veteran for the freedom you enjoy.
Remember to donate generously when it is
time to proudly wear a poppy, your sign of gratitude and remembrance.
A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank
cheque
made payable to 'Canada' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'
That is Honour, and there are way too many people
in this country who no longer understand it.

of the Netherlands Silver $10
A life saved is a bond forged. This selectively coloured coin shows the Liberation of the Netherlands from the perspective of those who lived it. Beneath the repeating "V" (for Victory) in Morse code, its depiction of a gift of tulips serves as a tribute to the people of the Netherlands and to the First Canadian Army, which was cast in the role of liberator in 1945.

Canadians today are serving in Afghanistan with many making the ultimate sacrifice,
to make the world a better place. Our fallen are given a Heroes welcome upon
returning. Highway 401 from Trenton to Toronto is closed to
regular traffic, allowing the procession to proceed unimpeded.
Thousands line the highway, and bridges over the 401, displaying their respect
for the final journey of our returning heroes. I selected the following, from many
available videos, displaying respect for our fallen
Canadian Heroes.
