Under the federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events always take place on July 1st. If Canada Day falls on a Saturday, the following Monday is generally also a day off for those businesses ordinarily closed on Saturdays.
On July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right but the British Parliament kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.
Overview
- The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
The British Parliament formally enacted the Charter as a part of the
Canada Act 1982 at the request of the Parliament of Canada in 1982, the result of the efforts of the Government of Prime Minister
Pierre Elliott Trudeau
With the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982, Canadian constitutional law has emerged as an important model on the world stage. The Charter exemplifies a distinctive relationship between the individual, the group and the state that reflects the post war diversity of Canada and its commitment to multiculturalism, pluralism and equal citizenship. The Charter has directly influenced the development of rights protection in other countries, including South Africa, Israel and New Zealand.
The Supreme Court of Canada's rulings in cutting edge issues are frequently cited in courts of constitutional jurisdiction around the world.
Many members of the faculty are involved in comparative constitutional law projects and research groups with their counterparts in other countries. The Charter has become one of Canada's most important exports!

All Canadians proudly celebrate, each July 1st, the birth of our nation in 1867.
From the smallest Hamlet to the largest city, from the very young
to the young at heart of any age, celebrate Canadian confederation in their
own special way.
In Port Dover
Canada Day is a fun filled day, starting in the morning with the
Port Dover Kinsmen's
Soap Box Derby
at 9:00 A.M.
See some pictures below. The Parade of Boats is at 11:00 A.M.
at the pier. Crowds line the Pier to get a glimpse of the patriotically
decorated boats.
Powell Park on Main Street hosts the Dog Show at 11:15 A.M.
The longest running annual Callithumpian Parade in Canada,
going back to 1867,
is one of the highlights of the day, drawing crowds from near and far,
starts at 2:00 P.M. but crowds stake out their
viewing spots along the route (Main Street) from early morning on.
The images below show some of the spectacular floats and the beautifully
decorated homes. The streets are lined several deep with celebrants enjoying
the music, the floats and the clowns; many proudly displaying Canada Day
costumes. Wonderful to see children, parents and the elderly smiling and
waving at the procession, showing their appreciation.
Canada Day Celebrations have been hosted by The Lions of Port Dover for many years.
You will see Lions all around town with the day's programming notes, selling the
Canada Day Buttons
for a nominal fee. Button sales help pay for the bands
and entertainment, so popular with all comers. All visitors are welcome
at
Lions Silver Lake Park.
Starting in the early afternoon, following the parade,
Food vendors provide
a variety of mouth watering delights along with refreshments,
kicking into high gear about 5:00 P.M..
The evenings entertainment is well worth attending.
You are only asked to support
Canada Day Celebrations by purchasing a
Canada Day Button.
In 2017 Canada celebrated its Sesquicentennial and Lions International celebrated their
Centennial.
Great headliners have included such notables as, the fantastic
Tia McGraff
and the delightful sounds of bygone days by,
Freddy Vette and the Flames.
Of course Canada Day would
not be complete without huge Fireworks about 10:00 P.M.
Everyone is welcome to join the celebrations and have a great time.
