Josh Groban – You Raise Me Up –
Lyrics
We were all born in Hungary (Magyar ország) but our destiny changed on October 23rd
1956, when the Hungarian Revolution broke out. Our parents made the bold and daring
decision to flee the Russian oppression that began following WWII.
The revolution turned us into refugees. We left our home in Budapest on November 28th
1956 soon after the seemingly successful revolution changed direction with a major
Russian force crushing the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a nation and our own family.
We fled to Austria where we found freedom and a welcoming population. The details
are quite hazy, since events changed frequently, and often rapidly, but almost always
without much warning. Within days we ended up in
St Pölten, Austria on December 1st 1956 where we spent
the longest time and we, the children, were welcomed into local homes for Christmas festivities. The Red Cross and the locals treated us incredibly well.
Since there were thousand of refugees in St Pölten, it took till Dec, 12th for documents to be issued to each member of our family, acknowledging our Refugee status/application.

Once the decision to emigrate to Canada was made and the legal and medical procedures
were handled we were on our way to
Bremerhaven, Germany
to board a ship. As I recall the
Arosa Star was the name of the ship but I'm only 99.9% positive. The voyage was incredible. We were treated like paying guests by the staff, with excellent food, wine served each dinner and a package of cigarettes provided to each guest at tables decorated and covered with white tablecloth.
We arrived in
Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada January 9th 1957 to begin our new
life in an unfamiliar new world, with unfamiliar customs and a language we had never heard or understood before. It is impossible to imagine the apprehensions or fears of my parents, who gave up everything familiar, all their friends and family, a relatively comfortable lifestyle, for us, the children, to have freedom and a future in an unknown, unfamiliar world.
There was no possibility of returning to the familiar. The commitment was total.
Do whatever it takes to thrive in the new world, adapt and assimilate.
To this day I appreciate many of the little things most people seldom even think about.
I have mentioned elsewhere how well we all made out in the free world, with great families, good jobs, nice homes and the never ending love and sacrifices of our parents. Some days I think back to how people lived in the wilderness, fighting the elements to survive, but today we have plenty of food, climate controlled homes, vehicles or public malls to escape the elements; instead of riding horseback or coach, or even enduring
the elements, waiting to take public transit everywhere. Such security and comfort were unimaginable and unavailable to wealthiest and most powerful in the not too distant past and still inconceivable to much of the world even today.
Yes I am grateful for this wonderful life; made possible by my parents sacrifices and hard work by all of us.
Canada is a nation of immigrants but our family is truly a family of émigrés, scattered
around the world. The ones I know of range from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Roumania,
Austria, Germany, Argentina, United States and of course Canada. This list, as extensive as it seems, is almost certainly incomplete; especially since Yugoslavia split into
three nations (Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) where some of our family from Mom or Dad's side most certainly migrated to. I seem to recall relatives in Italy and
Switzerland and possibly Brazil but I can't be positive.
The images below are from aboard the 9,000 tonne ship, Arosa Star, which took us across
the Atlantic, landing in
Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada
to start our new life. The rest of this
website is testament to how our parent's dreams and sacrifices became a reality.

Dad's first job was at Shelly Films on Evans Ave.
We moved to 1 Robindale Ave. (* a short stint at 30 Lunness Rd.)
moving to 226 30th St. – then the kids fledged and scattered.
* 30 Lunness was a large house with several bedrooms downstairs. Mom hoped to rent
the spare bedrooms to boarders but this was against zoning regulations. The purchase was annulled due to the undeclared zoning regulation.

Notes:
No colour corrections to scanned images (some rare exceptions).
Many pictures were quite small (2cm x 3cm) but scanned to decent size without major loss of resolution/quality. All flaws left for creative
people to remedy. Names are sequenced from left to right when possible. Steve is Uncle Steve (Mom's sister) Elisabeth's husband and Steven is their son. All care taken to
minimise damage to photos (hard to remove pictures from an album). There are
?
marks where
I did not know who the people were. Dates should be fairly accurate but no guarantees.
Lajos was Dad's brother, the only one to visit us in Canada (on two occasions) and
of course Aunt Elisabeth too came to Canada twice to visit.
And with that, you should know as much as I do about the family.
