WebSite History

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

A rather naive philosophy I personally can't subscribe to! Should we stop using electricity and go back to candles? Should we abandon cars in favour of walking or a horse and buggy? Should we scrap mobile phones and go back to landlines? Would anyone consider sailing the oceans in favour of flying? Would anyone abandon Books, Newspapers, TV, Computers or the Internet in favour of the Town Crier? Who would abandon e-mail for snail mail? Only the foolhardy would answer in the affirmative on any of the progressive ideas above. As difficult as it can be, progress involves change! I worked hard to ensure that this website remains valuable and vibrant, while incorporating the many positive changes. The updated website design should serve us well for some time to come, provided the content remains current. Time will tell.

This Webpage is a new format for displaying our website. It has a lot of advantages over the previous formats tested, primarily each page has considerably more data. The buttons on the left worked well but were a little hard to maintain. A labour intensive format was abandoned for the Frames format which allowed a single file to contain the navigation buttons but the usable workspace for data was restricted beyond what I considered reasonable. Some changes to website design were revolutionary, while much of the content has been evolutionary. Reality is, there is nothing fancy, clever or earthshaking here, just meticulous attention to accuracy.
Use of larger than the usual website fonts is to cater to a mature audience.

An interesting observation. Technology caters to the let's keep up with the Joneses mentality of I don't want to get left behind, but the intelligent know their needs and don't fall for the hype. Most never understand what they have before jumping to the next, more featureful, item that they understand or utilise even less. Miniaturisation to full featured cell phones swept the recent past with little regard to the ageing eyes that can no longer see any of the tiny text displayed. Tablets are the latest joke of the industry. People carry huge tablets 8"x10" (no wheels) with wifi technology to replace the small laptop, the tiny cell phone and equally tiny camera, a huge retrograde move but as long as there is a sucker to buy into what they are pushing they will keep pushing it; remember the pet rocks?!

Since this site was developed as a personal website, used for learning and educating, there are various pages of different formats. Striving for excellence has produced some variables in displaying content. It is truly a pleasure to maintain the site. All the time spent learning new ways to present the material is most satisfying and worthwhile. It is gratifying to get positive feedback and recognition from valued and trusted sources. As appreciated as positive feedback, suggestions for ways to improve both presentation and content are most welcome.

Everything worked great when I first created the pages under Windows XP IE8 and worked even with Vista and IE9 but I noticed some content stopped working with IE10 or 11 Windows 7. There are functions and creations that have stopped working or may stop working in the future. I fixed or modified some lost functions but I am sure I missed some, and may not be able to recreate the original content even if I chose to.

The KISS principle proves itself to be true once again. Keeping it simple is the best but what is life without adventure and creativity, even if it only lasts a short time.

NOTE:

The original web address has changed from fekete.x10hosting.com to fekete.x10host.com
The older versions of the site are no longer available. I hope the search engines get caught up on the new address SOON.

The Challenges of Web Building

The World Wide Web is evolving at a rapid pace. New features and some changing standards are being developed to make the development of websites simpler and more universally usable.

CSS has been a blessing in many ways; as with everything new, it too is developing and improving. Some features once considered invaluable are eliminated in favour of more robust and or more logical ways of accomplishing tedious tasks in much simpler ways. There are examples throughout this site that are a testament to the ever changing world. While the world tries to become a more perfect and functional environment, with less resources being used to accomplish more, developing a website becomes more complex and demanding. Keeping up with the changes is virtually impossible.

Browsers are being developed and released on shoestring budgets with some functions being left out for the sake of saving money and providing only the most basic essentials. Some browsers do not support the most popular music format .mp3 making sites that use .mp3 files (as this site does throughout) less functional in those browsers. Some audio players do not support popular formats .WAV or .MID but most if not all support the .OGG audio format. Even Microsoft's standard Internet Explorer (aka IE) is evolving, eliminating support for some legacy functions.

Since Music is such an integral part of this site, see the sample of how things changed over a short period of time. The site was developed using the first example below but since Windows 10 uses the Edge Browser (aka IE12) all the music code had to be changed (re written), for the second time, to example 2 which works in the most widely used browsers. I actually prefer the first look below to the large dark (morbid) looking user controls.

Music with audio and embed Demo

The reason I had to abandon the embed of audio is because in Edge the audio file autoplays regardless of specifying autostart=false. This can be a real mess when you have several audio files all auto playing at the same time as soon as you access the webpage.

Included Neil Diamond Hello Again snippet to demonstrate the point.
You won't automatically hear the snippet except in Edge browser. The audio version is the full version of the song.

See explanation above for abandoning embed solution!
I prefer embed's appearance but Edge browser auto plays audio file.

How the music has changed on this site alone.
The image above demonstrates how IE itself has changed over a short few years.
