Although scientific calculators and spreadsheet programs have functions to find the accurate doubling time, the 72 rule used above is close enough and easily understood for most rough calculations;
(69.3 is far more accurate than 72 but still not precise). Actually your money doubles in 23.450 years compounded annually at 3.00% not 24 years as indicated above.
The above calculation is used only to give you a rough estimate.

Quantum Supremacy
Could change the world in ways we never dreamt!

Computer scientists have seen quantum supremacy – the moment when a quantum computer could perform an action a conventional computer couldn’t – as an elusive, important milestone for their field. There are many research groups working on quantum computers and applications, but it appears Google has beaten its rivals to this milestone. (2019-10-23)

Scientists at Google on Wednesday declared, via a paper in the journal Nature, that they’d done something extraordinary. In building a quantum computer that solved an incredibly hard problem in 200 seconds – a problem the world’s fastest supercomputer would take 10,000 years to solve – they’d achieved “quantum supremacy.”

That is:

Google’s quantum computer did something that no conventional computer could reasonably do.

IBM, the company that operates the supercomputer that Google claims to have beaten, and a key quantum computer competitor, is disputing Google’s claims; saying that “the same task could be performed on a classical system in just 2.5 days, rather than the 10,000 years that Google is claiming”. Even at 2.5 days compared to 200 seconds the technological achievement is a quantum leap.

We may still be years away from having quantum computers that are useful for practical tasks, but Google’s findings could finally have provided proof that such a future is possible in the first place.

Aspect Ratios

The most popular aspect ratio is 3:2. This is the aspect ratio of 35mm film cameras and has been around for a long time. It became the standard for modern full frame cameras as well. Besides 3:2 aspect ratio, there are other ratios that are gaining popularity like 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9.

The two most common aspect ratios are 4:3, also known as 1.33:1 or fullscreen, and 16:9, also known as 1.78:1 or widescreen. (Larger aspect ratio formats are used in the motion picture industry.)

The old 4:3 aspect ratio (1024x768) lived as the computer monitor standard for many years. The 16:9 aspec ratio is the most commonly used on computers these days, HDTV uses this standard.

The 16:9 aspect ratio is 78% wider than it is tall. In comparison, the 4:3 aspect ratio is 33% wider than tall. Thus, the 16:9 aspect ratio can fit more information horizontally, while the 4:3 aspect ratio has more space vertically. Because of these characteristics, they're each used for different purposes.

Is should be noted that many images displayed on computers were designed for 4:3 aspect rario and look a little wide (making people look overweight) on the High Definition 16:9 monitors of today. It goes without saying that images look rather narrow or squished on the 4:3 monitors if they are designed to be displayed on the 16:9 monitors.

There are two way to correct/modify the aspect ratio of the image you see.

First, when displaying images on the website you can specify width and height of the displayed image. Obviously you can modify the dimension to look as it should on the aspect ratio of the display you choose.
Second, you can use an image editor and permanently modify the dimension of the image. This method makes it possible to share the image with others and it will look as it should on the monitor aspect ratio you chose to display the image correctly.
ALWAYS keep your original image and modify only a copy!

There are programs available that convert images to the desired aspect ratio. I am sure you are quite confused by all this technical jargon. I will try to demonstrate the difference of how images look at different aspect ratios on the monitor currenyly in use.

Ideally you should be able to determine the user's aspect ratio and display all images without distortion for the aspect ratio of the monitor being used.

You can do some of your own research about the subject and become more knowledgeable.

Red Circle 185x185 Red Circle 150x185 Blue Square 185x185 Blue Square 150x185
Notice how the circle is distorted horizontally to an oval and the square is destorted to a rectangle on the 16:9 monitor.
The second image is displayed more corrcetly on the 16:9 display
while the first image is more correct on the 4:3 computer monitor, the second image is (squished) distorted vertically.

The circle and square are actually 185x185 pixels, displayed in the second instance as 150x185 pixels.

Jim Jim
The images above better demonstrate how people look at different aspect ratios.
The same image looks quite different at 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios

Found Information about Screen sizes. TV bezels (the frame around the screen) vary in size and adds to the overall physical TV dimensions.

Here is the formula for calculating Screen Dimensions

For a Standard 4:3 screen:
Width  = Diagonal X 0.8
Height = Diagonal X 0.6
SO, a 32 inch 4:3 screen is 25.6 inches wide and 19.2 tall.

For a 16:9 (HD TV) Widescreen:
Width  = Diagonal X 0.87157552765421
Height = Diagonal X 0.490261259680549
SO, a 43 inch 16:9 screen is 37.5 inches wide and 21.1 inches tall.
A 52" TV has 4 times the viewing area of a 26" TV & a 60" TV has 4 x the viewing area of a 30" TV.

I created the following table for calculating Screen Dimensions, based on the above formula.
I ignored the old 4:3 format since they have gone the way of the Dodo Bird.

Men Are So Predictable

Not looking for sympathy but I just got out, after a week in hospital.
Look But Don't Touch Not sure exactly what happened, but I remember this well-endowed mid 20 ish lovely blonde I could not keep my eyes off, carrying 4 bags of groceries. As we got on the elevator I noticed her well filled low cut shirt, barely restraining its content from escaping, said in small print Look But Don’t Touch. I think she spotted me reading the message and said in the sexiest voice you could imagine, would you push one please. All I remember is waking up in the hospital three days later.

I feel much better now and a friend asked me;
would you do it again?

– Would I?! –

Give me another chance, now that I know what to expect.

Daylight Saving Time May Become Permanent

It's a Matter of Time

The Sunshine Protection Act

The US Senate Passed Bill on March 15, 2022 to make Daylight Saving Time PERMANENT in 2023. It will probably be signed into law, but as usual, time will tell.

The Fate of Daylight Saving Time

Ontario passed a similar Bill is 2020 and will act on it as soon as the US passes it into law keeping North America universal.

Ontario on DST – It only makes sense to keep clocks the same throughout Nort America

There are many who will welcome this change if or when it's implemented. Many have serious problems with the biannual time change. The perceived problem is universal and would be implemented throughout the world. The initial reasons for the change seem to have failed to materialise and there seem to some valid reasons to abandon the biannual time change for health and safety reasons, in addition to the unpopularity of the practice. Welcome Weather

We have had incredible weather in September 2015. The first full day of fall is September 24th and the forecast for the week at 5 P.M. looks like this.

November is starting off in unusual style with warm weather for the time of year.

Welcoming 2018

Weather Forecast
Forecast to start 2018

2017 ended with a cold spell and more than the usual amount of snow. -25 C° overnight for a few days not uncommon. I recall a few years ago when New Years Eve was 10 C° at midnight. Huge areas of the US East coast and significant areas of Canada have been in the grips of weeks long cold spell. I can't recall a time when a cold spell was this svere or lasted this long. Climate change is not only real but certainly costly.

From the Wether Network

"Sunday, December 31, 2017, 4:57 PM - 2017 ends on a record-breaking cold note, and while hopes may be high for the new year, temperatures won't be, as another round of bone-chilling Arctic air is set to sweep through eastern Canada in the first week of 2018."

A Polar Vortex dumped frigid temperatures on large sections of the US North East to begin the year, followed by a dangerous bomb cyclone, making life miserable for millions. Even sections of Florida experinced a rare snow fall in early January. Charleston South Caroline rarly sees snow but recived 5" of the white fluffy stuff. Winter seems more wintery than it has been for some years. As with many phenomenon there is beauty hiding when you seek it.

Here it is April 10, 2018 and amazingly we have had some light snow flurries each of the last 8 days, only one accumulated to 3/8", the rest were barely noticable. The Notrh Eastern US has been suffering relentless winter storms to this day.

Contrary to popular misinformation rampant on social media and often refrenced by politicians with an agenda, Canada's forests contribute CO2 to the environment, not remove the CO2 from our amosphere. Scientific study finds that Canada's forests actually emit more carbon than they absorb contributing to climate change.

Carbon emissions and removals – A study of Canada's forests and their contributions
to our environment.

Canada's forests have actually added to our country's greenhouse gas emissions for each of the past 15 years on record.

Welcoming 2019

Welcome 2019

As you can see 2019 came in at 12°C. A huge contrast to the -25°C arrival of 2018. It was wet and windy but you don't have to shovel rain or wind. January has to date 14th been cooler than the 1st but barely below zero so far. Since I am not a winter person, I am looking forward to spring at the earliest possible time.

The Four Seasons

Autumn Leaves
Autumn Leaves

See chart below to see the exact dates and times for the first day of each season — namely, the spring or vernal equinox, summer solstice, fall or autumnal equinox, and winter solstice.

Why do the seasons change? The four seasons are determined by shifting sunlight (not heat!) — which is determined by how our planet orbits the Sun and the tilt of its axis.

Leap Day

Monday is Feb. 29 2016 — the bissextile or "leap day," an artifact that dates back to the year 46 B.C.

Why do we call it "leap" year?
The term for inserting extra time in calendars is "intercalation," which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. We use "leap year" because each date on the calendar jumps ahead two days of the week instead of one. For example: Christmas 2014 fell on Thursday, and 2015 Christmas fell on Friday. This year (2016), Christmas will "leap" over Saturday and fall on Sunday.

What are the odds of being born on Feb. 29th?
The chances of being a "leaper," or "leapling," are 1 in 1,461, according to the Honor Society of Leap Year Babies. That's because there's just one Feb. 29 every four years, or 1,461 days.

Perhaps Leapers miscalculated
Aren't the odds of being born on leap day actually 1 in 1,506? You have to take into account the 3/4 years divisible by 100 years as well where they don't have leap day. So there are actually 97 leap days every 400 years. So 400*365+97 = 146,097 total days, of which 97 are leap days. That makes the odds 97/146,097 or approximately 1 in 1,506. You'd think "leapers" would at least calculate it correctly.

Creating a More Suitable Calendar

Of the many proposals, I favour the World Calendar; created by Elisabeth Achelis of The World Calendar Association in 1930.

The World Calendar consists of 364 days. The year would be divided into four quarters, with each quarter consisting of three months. The first month of each new quarter (January, April, July and October) would have 31 days and would always begin on a Sunday. All the remaining months would have just 30 days.

In such a setup, each date would fall on the same day of the week every year. So if you were born on a Tuesday, your birthday would always fall on a Tuesday. Independence Day would always fall on a Wednesday; Christmas Day would be a Monday; Canadians would celebrate Thanksgiving annually on October 9th, the second Monday in October and US Thanksgiving would finally have a fixed date: Nov. 23, since the fourth Thursday in November on the World Calendar would always be on that date. National holidays and observances could be changed if need be, to adapt the new universal calendar, as so many already are.

While the World Calendar is not perfect it seems to have the most merit in my opinion. You can research the pitfalls, solutions and workarounds of adopting the World Calendar for yourself.

The Sudbury Big Nickel

Big Nickel Sudbury

122 Big Nickel Road “Dynamic Earth” – Dr. Ted Szilva was the creator of the Canadian Centennial Numismatic Park which opened on July 22, 1964. Ted spearheaded the creation of the Big Nickel and the original Big Nickel mine on the Dynamic Earth site. Today, the Big Nickel is an icon synonymous with Sudbury, the nickel capital of the world. In 1949 the Bank of Canada launched a nationwide contest for the design of the 1951 five-cent coin to mark the bicentennial of the chemical isolation of nickel by the Swedish chemist Baron Axel Frederic Cronstedt. The Big Nickel is a replica of this commemorative 12-sided coin designed by Stephen Trenka. The obverse features King George VI who was the monarch at the time. The reverse features a stylized nickel refinery with one large smokestack. It weighs almost 13,000 kilograms and is nine meters in diameter. Scientists and residents of Greater Sudbury work hand in hand to innovate and implement new strategies to re-green the community. The City of Greater Sudbury is a world leader in reclamation of environmentally impacted landscapes. The main components of Sudbury's ore are nickel, copper and sulfur. Early methods of smelting released a lot of sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) into the atmosphere. Since the early 1970s, SO2 has been greatly reduced which has fostered ecological recovery. In 2015, healthy, reproducing small mouth bass returned to Sudbury's Clearwater Lake which is slowly recovering from acidification.

I recall seeing the huge coin, from many miles away, on my firts trip to the west coast of Canada. An impressive site.

Obverse = Heads    Reverse = Tails
Obverse and its opposite, reverse, refer to the two flat faces of coins and some other two-sided objects, including paper money, flags (see Flag terminology), seals, medals, drawings, old master prints and other works of art, and printed fabrics. In this usage, obverse means the front face of the object and reverse means the back face. The obverse of a coin is commonly called heads, because it often depicts the head of a prominent person, and the reverse is called tails.

In fields of scholarship outside numismatics, the term front is more commonly used than obverse, while usage of reverse is widespread.

Brain Test

illusion

Take a close look at he image below and decide what you are looking at.

Braintest

If you see the girl sitting and boy with his arms around her neck, then you are left brain.
Look again. For in reality it’s just the opposite.
Then make the right brain work and you will see that it’s the boy who is sitting and wearing a black polo. The girl has her arms around the neck of the boy and wearing blue jeans! Not convinced about this then who has hair on his arms and legs?

Pretty special, isn’t it!

We all have two cerebral hemispheres that constantly interact but each have specific functions.
The left hemisphere breaks down problems and analysis.
The right hemisphere is interested in everything and innovates.
The ideal is to foster communication between the two brains. But our education, or our temperament, we sometimes leads to favor one of these two areas.

This predominance determines different ways of thinking about life.

Perspective

Recently, there was a race between a Russian Car and an American Car.
They were the only cars in the race. The American car won by a huge margin.

The Russian newspaper, Pravda, reported it as follows:

“Recently, there was a car race in which both a Russian and American car were entered. While the Russian car came in second, the American car came in next to last.”

With a moment to think, one can very quickly rebrand almost everything to sound much better.
In many ways this reminds me of the Republican's rhetoric about the Trump accomplishments, similar to the way Conservatives in Canada report Liberal achievements. Of course this is only when on rare occasion they actually tell the truth and not their constant lies and misinformation.

Illusion or Reality?

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink.

If you stare at the black "+" in the center, the moving dot turns to green.

Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky!
It's amazing how our brain works.

There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear.

The Wonders of Science

One of the wonderful things about science is that we’re always discovering new things that not only expand our knowledge, but also change things we’d taken as a given for many years. Science, like evolution, never stops to grow human knowledge about our world.

Origins of Life

A Forgotten Scientist May Have Cracked Life’s Origins on Earth
50 Years Ago, But the World Ignored His Discovery

A Theory Decades Ahead of Its Time In 1971, Tibor Gánti, a Hungarian scientist working under Soviet rule, proposed a bold answer to one of biology’s biggest questions: what is the simplest form life could take? His concept, known as the chemoton, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, suggested that life must comprise three interdependent components: a self-sustaining metabolism, a system for storing heritable information (such as genes), and a boundary separating it from the environment.

For Gánti, these weren’t optional traits—they were essential. “Without all three,” he wrote, “you have chemistry, not biology.” His work, however, remained mostly inaccessible. His key book Az Élet Princípiuma (The Principles of Life) was only published in Hungarian and wasn’t translated until decades later.

Today, with scientists exploring protocells, minimal genomes, and the origins of lifebeyond Earth, his once-overlooked model is attracting serious attention.

Fresh Lab Evidence Revives an Old Idea In recent years, however, laboratory evidence has increasingly aligned with Gánti’s vision. In 2023, a research team led by Sara Szymkuć at the Polish Academy of Sciences published a study showing that just six simple chemicals, including water and methane, can yield over 30,000 biologically relevant compounds, including precursors to RNA and proteins. This suggests the origin of life may not have required improbable molecular coincidences.

At the same time, synthetic biologists such as Jack Szostak at Harvard Medical School and Taro Toyota at the University of Tokyo have built protocells—simple membrane-bound structures capable of growth and division. These structures mimic features of living cells without relying on DNA, echoing the chemoton’s principles.

Life, Defined for Earth—And Elsewhere Back in 1994, a committee at NASA proposed a now-famous working definition of life: “a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution.” But Gánti’s chemoton offers a more structured, testable framework. By combining metabolism, information storage, and compartmentalisation, it describes life as a functioning whole—not just a molecule that can copy itself.

That’s exactly the kind of model needed for astrobiology, where researchers are hunting for life that may never have used DNA or RNA. On icy moons like Europa or Enceladus, or in the atmosphere of Venus, the chemoton’s flexible definition of life could help detect organisms fundamentally different from those on Earth.

New human-like species discovered in South Africa

Scientists have discovered a new human-like species in a burial chamber deep in a cave system in South Africa.
The discovery of 15 partial skeletons is the largest single discovery of its type in Africa. The researchers claim that the discovery will change ideas about our human ancestors.
Homo Naledi, a new species of the genus Homo from the Dinaledi Chamber, South Africa. The studies which have been published in the journal Elife also indicate that these individuals were capable of ritual behaviour.

Homo Naledi
Homo Naledi
Click for larger image

Modern humans, or Homo sapiens, are now the only living species in their genus. But as recently as 100,000 years ago, there were several other species that belonged to the genus Homo. Together with modern humans, these extinct human species, our immediate ancestors and their close relatives, are collectively referred to as ‘hominins’. See more details here.
You are encouraged to do further research on Homo Naledi to discover the latest developments.

A chronology of human evolution

As we know it today

Ardipithecus ramidus (4.4 million years ago) : Fossils were discovered in Ethiopia in the 1990s. Pelvis shows adaptations to both tree climbing and upright walking.

Australopithecus afarensis (3.9 - 2.9 million years ago) : The famous "Lucy" skeleton belongs to this species of human relative. So far, fossils of this species have only been found in East Africa. Several traits in the skeleton suggest afarensis walked upright, but they may have spent some time in the trees.

Homo habilis (2.8 - 1.5 million years ago) : This human relative had a slightly larger braincase and smaller teeth than the australopithecines or older species, but retains many more primitive features such as long arms.

Homo naledi (Of unknown age, but researchers say it could be as old as three million years) : The new discovery has small, modern-looking teeth, human-like feet but more primitive fingers and a small braincase.

Homo erectus (1.9 million years - unknown) : Homo erectus had a modern body plan that was almost indistinguishable from ours. But it had a smaller brain than a modern person's combined with a more primitive face.

Homo neanderthalensis (200,000 years - 40,000 years) : The Neanderthals were a side-group to modern humans, inhabiting western Eurasia before our species left Africa. They were shorter and more muscular than modern people but had slightly larger brains.

Homo sapiens (200,000 years - present) : Modern humans evolved in Africa from a predecessor species known as Homo heidelbergensis. A small group of Homo sapiens left Africa 60,000 years ago and settled the rest of the world, replacing the other human species they encountered (with a small amount of interbreeding).

Skeleton Reveals Mysterious Human Relative

Until this new find Lucy was considered the oldest known humanoid at 3.2 million years. Researchers first came across Little Foot's remains in 1994 and is considered to date back 3.67 million years, making it the oldest known humanoid.

The Common Housefly

Housefly
Click for larger image

The average housefly has a lifespan of about 4 weeks. Due to this relatively short lifespan, a large amount of a housefly’s life is spent attempting to reproduce. What a life! Eat and copulate.

Houseflies are relatively easy to culture, have fast reproductive cycles, and have long-lived post-mitotic cellular tissues (mitosis = Cell division in which the nucleus divides into nuclei containing the same number of chromosomes). These properties make houseflies ideal model organisms for use in the laboratory.

Maggots can be used to clean open wounds of dead and decaying tissue, and there is evidence that suggests maggot-based therapies are more effective for open wound treatment than conventional methods. Perhaps most incredibly, there is evidence that maggot secretions are effective antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant staph infections.

I guess every cloud has a silver lining. Even the common housefly, known as carriers of disease, can contribute to making life better.

Earwigs (AKA Pincher Bug)

Earwig
Male Earwig

Despite their scary appearance and reputation, earwigs are not directly harmful to humans, they do not spread disease. Contrary to old myths about earwigs, they do not crawl in people’s ears. In fact, they are often beneficial, acting as scavengers of decaying matter and predators of insect larvae, slug eggs, aphids, and other garden pests. Known as environmental janitors. There are 22 types of Earwigs in North America and there are over a 1,000 different species all over the world. Earwigs will pinch humans if they are picked up and agitated. While the pinch can sometimes be painful, no venom is transferred, and the pinch rarely breaks the skin.

Earwigs grow to about 15mm (0.6 inches) leght. Their pincers or forceps have multiple uses, as they can be used to fend off an attacking predator or utilized to catch prey. It is also said they use them in their mating rituals. You can identify a male vs female earwig quite easily by looking at their pincers. A male will have two distinct curved pincers while a female has two more narrow straight pincers.

Earwigs are generally nocturnal, and seek out dark cracks and crevices to rest during the day. They are mainly vegetarian scavengers, but will eat carrion and other insects. Although they have wings, earwigs are usually reluctant to fly. Unlike most insects, a female earwig is a good mother.

Earwigs have an average lifespan of one year. The mating season for earwigs is in autumn and winter, with eggs typically hatched in the spring. Earwig season typically takes place in late spring and early summer. In the colder, winter months, earwigs will stay underground until the ground begins to warm.

The Adorable Chipmunk

Chipmunk
Eastern Chipmunk

For sure, they’re cute and adorable as can be with their enchanting big eyes, bushy tails, striped backs and chubby cheeks. You’ve probably seen these mini rodents darting about your yard or nearby woodlands. These little critter can be seen everywhere in Ontario but as you will find out they are everywhere. Chipmunk Facts

When we used to go camping we encoutered these beauties scurrying everywhere gathering food. Generally they are not timid. We used to feed them right out of our hands. Even at the cottage they would often come and take peanuts or sunflower seeds from your hand. We have many in our back yard but they seem less inclined to be trusting in this environment. I have long admired the industrious nature of these little critters. It seems they never eat but never stop stuffing their little pouches, from sunup to sundown, with incredible amounts of food. They seem to pack their cheeks with food and scurry off to their dens to eat or store their haul. Chipmunks sleep up to 15 hours a day (at least in captivity). On average, eastern chipmunks live three or more years in the wild, but in captivity they may live as long as eight years.

Chipmunks are a member of the squirrel family. There are 25 species of chipmunks, ranging mostly from Canada to Mexico. Most species of chipmunks bear one litter each summer with three to six young, but Eastern Chipmunks bear two litters per year with three to four young each. Their young are called pups. Chipmunks make homes for themselves by creating burrows that consist of an underground tunnel system or by making nests in logs or bushes. Their tunnel systems can be 10 to 30 feet (3 to 9.1 m) long. Chipmunks are loaners but are territorial and defend their territory vigorously. Once they mature, after about two months, they venture out to face the realities of survival on their own. Only in mating season do the bucks seek out the does to copulate and they go on their seperate ways once their duty for the propagation of the species is done.

All About Chipmunks

As with everything on this site, the intent is to provide enough information
to create awareness and peak your interest. You are encouraged to
do further research to broaden your knowledge on any subject included here.

Chipmunks hibernate, but they don't store fat to see them through long winters like bears, they wake up periodically to nurish themselves. During hibernation, chipmunks can seem like they are dead. Their heart rates can drop from 350 beats per minute to around 4 beats per minute, and their body temperature can drop from 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34.4 Celsius) to as cold as 40 F (4.44 C).

Hurricanes Typhoons Cyclones

Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons are the SAME thing (a violent rotating windstorm). They are just called by different names, depending on what part of the world they occur. Damage is mostly caused after they make landfall.

Hurricanes: Atlantic and East Pacific
Typhoons: West Pacific
Cyclones: South Pacific and Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal

Tornadoes happen over land when thunderstorm cells have rotation in them. Important to note that hurricanes/cyclones/typhoons can spawn tornadoes; however, tornadoes can't spawn hurricanes/cyclones/typhoons. Tornadoes are classified into five categories, F-0 through F-5.

Classification of Tornadoes

Catagory

Wind Speed & Effect

F – 0 40 - 72 mph, (64 - 116 Km/h)
  Light damage
chimney damage, tree branches broken
F – 1 73 - 112 mph, (117 - 180 Km/h)
  Moderate damage
mobile homes pushed off foundation or flipped over
F – 2 113 - 157 mph, (181 - 253 Km/h)
  Considerable damage
mobile homes demolished, trees uprooted
F – 3 158 - 205 mph, (254 - 330 Km/h)
  Severe damage
roofs and walls torn down, trains overturned, cars thrown around
F – 4 207 - 260 mph, (331 - 418 Km/h)
  Devastating damage
well-constructed walls levelled
F – 5 261 - 318 mph, (419 - 512 Km/h)
  Violent damage
homes lifted off foundation and carried considerable distances, autos thrown as far as 100 meters (110 yards).

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT F-SCALE WINDS: Do not use F-scale (Fujita Tornado Damage Scale) winds literally. These precise wind speed numbers are actually guesses and have never been scientifically verified. Different wind speeds may cause similar-looking damage from place to place -- even from building to building. Without a thorough engineering analysis of tornado damage in any event, the actual wind speeds needed to cause that damage are unknown. The Enhanced F Scale, implemented in 2007, for Tornado Damage has 28 categories.

Nature's fury can be devastating. Destruction by floods, fire and earthquakes are perhaps easier to understand than the enormous power of rushing air. Winds tossing huge vehicles and ripping buildings to shreads like they were mere toys or match sticks are difficult to fathom untill the results are witnessed first hand.

Mc-vs-Mac
The short story is that “Mc” and “Mac” are prefixes that mean “son of.” Early inconsistencies in records are what led to having both Mc and Mac prefixes. Mc is just an abbreviation of Mac, and both can actually be abbreviated further to the much less common M’.

As you might guess from this, the popular myth that a Mac name denotes Scottish heritage while a Mc name denotes Irish heritage is simply not true. Similarly, the assertion that Mac names are Protestant while Mc names are Catholic doesn’t have a shred of truth to it. They both just mean “son of” and can be used by anyone of either descent or religion.

Someone with the last name of MacDonald is sort of like someone with the last name of Johnson–likely, each had ancestors with the name of Donald or John. Back in the day, it was common to differentiate people with the same name by also calling them by the names of their fathers, which is how this sort of surname started to become popular.

You can probably see why Mc and Mac names typically contain a second capital letter. Since proper nouns are capitalized, you would write “son of Donald,” not “son of donald.” In the same way, you would usually write MacDonald rather than Macdonald, but there are obviously exceptions.

First Graders's Understanding of Proverbs

A 1st grade school teacher had twenty-six students in her class.
She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders.

Their insight may surprise you.
While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-year-olds, because the last one is a classic!

I recall that as a young boy I looked at the map and often wondered if I could or would ever get to see these beutiful lakes, or if I would ever see Nigara Falls. Perhaps it was something within that, that foreshadowed something from the future that is beyond explanation. I am grateful that my life unfolded as it has, allowing me to not only visit such magnificence but to spend most of my life living next to the dreams I dared not dream.

Every year, institutions in the United States dominate rankings of the best colleges in the world.

Of the top 10 best universities in the world, eight are located in the U.S. But despite having some of the best educational institutions on earth, the

You got your windshield cleaned (often all your windows), oil checked, water level in your rad and battery checked, tire pressure checked and topped up and gas courteously served with a smile (30 cents a Gallon or less), without asking, ALL for FREE, every time. Every station had at least one mechanic.
I also recall buying my first car with a FULL tank of gas for $50 cash.

What Colour is the Dress

What Colour Is The Dress

The controversy world wide this week has been the colour of the above dress.

Take a good look at the dress and decide what colour you think the dress is, even though it may seem completely obvious to you. There are people out there who look at the dress and see a Gold and White dress, as do I. There are however those who see a Black and Blue dress.

Once you are sure you know the dress colour click to see the following image
These images are all same dress. I am not making this up. This image has gone viral around the world with different people seeing the different colours mentioned. Some audiences in the same location were actually split about 50 50 on the dress colours. Some even see all three dresses as Black and Blue with different lighting.

The human mind is a wonderful thing. We see things as they are but our mind does colour correction, because we know what white is supposed to look like, and even if the white has a pink or blue hue we see it as white. We have all seen old photos with red, blue or green hue, making skin tones look weird but we accept them as skin tones and whites as white etc.. This dress blows many away. Everyone is conviced that what they see is the right dress colours and those seeing Gold and White will not believe the dress is actually Black and Blue. Those seeing Black and Blue can't understand how anyone can see Gold and White.

Here is a printable image so you can try the experiment on your friends.

Controversy About the Word

Perhaps these examples are clear evidence that eyewitnesses are not the most credible. Listen to the next word and after you know what you heard; beware that close to half of the world hears one word while the other half of the world hears a completely different word. Each group is convinced that the other group is either lying about what they heard or that they are simply not hearing the correct word. There are rare individuals who hear one word at times and the other word at different times. Sometimes we have to question whether we can trust our senses.

YOU decide for yourself what it is that YOU hear.

The Antonon AN-225

One day we were passing the Hamilton Airport and saw the Antonon on the tarmac. I took lots of pictures but they, along with many others, have gone missing. This huge bird was most impressive.

The Boing 747

The Boing 747 made its maiden flight in 1969. The 747 was the first huge commercial airliner. The first version of the 747, the 747-100, was originally distinguished by an upper deck passenger lounge with just three windows. The first 747 passenger flight was Jan. 22, 1970, on Pan Am's New York to London route.

Over the years Boing delivered several version, starting with 747-100 seating capacity of up to 452, eventually the 747-400 had a capacity of up to 524 passengers. Thse birds were a huge increase in size, capacity, safety and range. We were fortunate enough to fly on the 747 on more than one occasion, Wardair and British Airways.

Finally after 51 years of history making service, some airlines including British Airways, are retiring their fleet of 747 Jumbo Jets. New aircraft, such as the Airbus 380, are more fuel efficient and are being used to replace the aging 747s. The 747 was first, with its unique design and its many industry setting features, and will forever remain a sentimental favourite in my heart.

Space Shuttle Piggybacked on 747

Shuttle Enterprise Atop 747

What a way to kick off the Paris Air Show! It was 1983, and NASA's space shuttle program was just getting off the ground.

A modified NASA Boeing 747 gave the prototype shuttle 'Enterprise' a piggyback ride across Western Europe, making a stop in Paris and thrilling the crowd with a demonstration flight on opening day.

Space Shuttle Enterprise was in Toronto Ontario, in June 1983 on it's return flight from the Paris Airshow. It had also appeared at Fairford and Stanstead in the UK. Enterprise was not a true space vehicle, it lacked the heat shield and had in fact been built without engines. It was primarily for use in the Approach and Landing Test Program.(ALT Program). Launched from this B.747, it became a rather heavy, fast glider.

The piggibacked shuttle came in for a landing at Pearson International Airport on a June afternoon, after circling Toronto for a publicity run. The event was well publicised and the flight passed by the IBM office where I worked, which was on the glide path for landing at Toronto's Airport. The working shuttles were transported in the same manner from each landing site to the next launch site as well as refurbishing and inspection locations.

The Space Shuttle was the US workhorse responsible for building the ISS. Not only were huge sections of the ISS carried into space for final assembly but also ferried astronauts to and from Earth to the ISS.

Space Shuttel Discovery Final Liftoff, Last Shuttle flight 4:54 P.M. 2011. With that the US Shuttle program came to an end, to bereplaced by Russian's transporting astronuats to and from the ISS. Currently SpaceX is used to resupply the ISS.

Charities in Canada

Interesting figures about how charities use their funds. The statistics reflect Admistrative costs as well as costs associated with Fund Raising. Some charities use virtually all their funds for programs annually, while many have reserves (listed as Surplus) for unforeseen emergencies. Canadian Charity Intelligence allows you to search for charities you wish to have information about. Perhaps knowing how your donations help the causes you support, you may be influenced by the way the various charities utilize the funds raised.

The mission of Ci is:

To help donors make informed and intelligent giving decisions
that can have the greatest impact for Canada.

From time to time e-mails circulate about how charities rate by various criterion. Some publish the salaries of CEOs for charities but these figures are often slanted. A charity that raises 1 million and the CEO earns no salary but they spend 700,000 on fundraising may not be as efficient as the charity that raises 800 million and the CEO is paid a million in salary, but distribute 90% of everything raised to the cause they are set up to support. Some important consideration doners would find interesting, before donating can be found at the website for the top 100 charities.

You may be surprised by how much of your donation never makes it to helping the cause you wish to support. All charities are a business with overhead, ranging from rent to administrative costs, salaries and fund raising expenses. Doing your research may help you to choose your charities wisely.

Long Live Friendship!!!!!!

I don't know......some say life is too short,
others say it is too long,
but I know that nothing that we do makes sense
if we don't touch the hearts of others!
May you always have love to share,
health to spare, and friends who care.
